The New Zealand summer is here in full swing.

A good suncare strategy is vital. You have to be vigilant to avoid the sun damage and premature ageing that comes from the harsh New Zealand sun.

But, what is the best suncare lotion to use on your face?

At Jamele Skincare (487 Cameron Road, Tauranga) we recommend one of two options.

ONE: A mineral sunblock that uses zinc or titanium dioxide to form a physical protective barrier against the sun. Environ RAD Suncare Lotion is a good option.

TWO: A unique plant-based alternative called Janesce Suncare Lotion.

This botanical innovation is a very clean product, containing none of the questionable chemicals that are prevalent in many SPF creams on the market. Instead, it contains a concentrated blend of organic plant-based extracts for natural sun protection. It will appeal to those who favour natural, organic plant-based skincare.

Janesce Suncare Lotion features a potent blend of plants such as helicrysum, viola tricolor, aloe, shea butter, calendula and carrot seed oil.

Collectively, these plant extracts are anti-oxidant rich and are natural UVA and UVB sun filters. The plant actives are readily absorbed into the epidermis where they offer natural sun protection.

VITAMIN D FRIENDLY

“Something I love about this botanical suncare lotion is that, unlike conventional sunscreens, it does not interfere with the natural protective mechanisms your skin already has in place to protect itself. One of these mechanisms is the production of Vitamin D, an important nutrient for our overall health. Many sun blocks on the market will supress vitamin D production in the skin. Janesce Suncare Lotion won’t.”

HOW TO USE

  • Apply in the morning, every morning.
  • Only a small amount is required with each application. Half a pump of product will cover the face area. One pump will cover the face and neck area.
  • Apply the Suncare Lotion either under or over your daily moisturiser.
  • One bottle lasts five to six months with daily use.

Important Note:

Janesce Suncare Lotion does not include a typical SPF sunscreen and will not provide immediate sun protection. Initially, it must be used for at least seven consecutive days before it becomes effective. This is because the natural, plant-based sun protective qualities build over time to protect skin at a cellular level. It is important to protect the skin by applying Janesce Suncare Lotion every day of the year, not just during summer.

If you are going to have prolonged exposure to the sun, cover up with sunhat and protective clothes and apply an SPF sunscreen to any remaining exposed areas.

UNDERSTANDING SPF

No sunscreen can block all UV rays. The sun protection factor (SPF)is a measurement for UVB rays only.

In Australasia there are 33 recognised sunscreen ingredients that protect the skin from UVB rays. Recent studies show that some of these ingredients are absorbed into the blood and may undermine health.

Janesce Suncare Lotion does not use any of these questionable ingredients. Instead it uses organic plant actives that progressively build the skins natural resilience to both UVA and UVB rays over time. The downside of this is that it makes obtaining an SPF rating difficult. Standard SPF testing is only effective for products that provide sun protection with a single application.

Rest assured that Janesce Suncare Lotion provides a high level of sun protection, even though this cannot by validated by current industry practices.

It is a genuine and effective suncare innovation, the brainchild of Janice Sarre Smith, the founder of Janesce Skincare.  Jan, now 87, has been creating plant-based skincare with integrity and compassion for decades.  She is a true pioneer and has been a forerunner of the plant-based skincare movement long before it came on trend.
